National Prop Trading Day, observed annually on September 28, recognizes the proprietary trading industry and its role in modern financial markets. The day celebrates the people, technology, discipline and entrepreneurial spirit that shape the field.
Proprietary trading, or prop trading, involves firms using their own capital and systems to trade financial instruments. In many modern programs, individual traders first complete an evaluation and, if successful, trade within defined risk limits. Depending on the firm's model, trading may take place in a simulated environment or through an account backed by the firm's capital. Traders may then receive a share of eligible profits without funding a traditional trading account themselves.
The industry brings together quantitative researchers, software engineers, discretionary traders and execution specialists. Their work supports market liquidity, efficient pricing, risk management and the development of advanced trading technology.
National Prop Trading Day was founded by Greg Khojikian, a futures industry veteran with more than 25 years of experience. It can be marked through trading simulations, educational events, career panels or discussions about responsible risk management. Celebrations can be shared using the hashtag #NationalPropTradingDay.
