National Super Intelligence Day, observed annually on September 22, recognizes the growing public conversation around artificial intelligence and the language used to describe it.
The term "super intelligence" was proposed as an alternative to "artificial intelligence" by then U.S. President Donald Trump during a United Nations General Assembly speech. Trump argued that "artificial" can make the technology sound less authentic or capable. The suggestion followed a public poll in which "super intelligence" was selected over alternatives including "superior intelligence," "extreme intelligence," and "supreme intelligence."
In technology, however, "superintelligence" generally refers to hypothetical or advanced systems that could exceed human abilities across a broad range of tasks. As a result, the term, nor the abbreviation SI, has not fully replaced AI in common industry use.
National Super Intelligence Day offers an opportunity to explore the development, applications, and implications of AI, as well as the terminology used to discuss the technocratic future.
