World Body Dysmorphic Disorder Awareness Day is observed annually on September 3 to increase understanding of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), reduce stigma, and promote hope, treatment, and recovery. The inaugural observance in 2026 highlighted BDD as a serious but treatable mental health condition that affects more than 100 million people worldwide.

People living with BDD experience distressing, persistent thoughts about perceived flaws in their appearance that may be minor or unnoticeable to others. These concerns can consume hours each day and lead to behaviors such as repeated mirror checking, excessive grooming, comparing one's appearance, seeking reassurance, skin picking, or pursuing cosmetic procedures. BDD can interfere with school, work, relationships, and everyday life, yet it often goes undiagnosed for years.

Founded by the International OCD Foundation and the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation, this global observance encourages individuals, researchers, clinicians, advocates, and community organizations to share educational resources, personal stories, and treatment information. The day reminds anyone affected by BDD that support is available, effective treatment can help, and recovery is possible. Learn more, find helpful resources, and join efforts to spread awareness each year on September 3.
