UNESCO International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) brings together maritime archaeologists, heritage organizations, and communities around the world. The first observance on August 21, 2026 was especially meaningful as it took place during the 25th anniversary year of the 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
To celebrate, UNESCO-accredited non-governmental organizations launched a 24-hour video stream featuring underwater shipwrecks from around the globe. Available through their YouTube channel, the program highlights how experts investigate, document, and study underwater archaeological sites. Viewers will be able to explore hard-to-reach heritage through video footage and 3D models, making these remarkable discoveries accessible to everyone.
The accredited NGO network brings together organizations with extensive knowledge of underwater archaeology, conservation, and community engagement. Through science, education, and public participation, these groups work to protect underwater heritage and prevent its exploitation.
The 2001 Convention promotes scientific research, preservation, and education over commercial salvage and treasure hunting. It recognizes underwater cultural heritage as a shared cultural resource, not a commodity, and emphasizes that it belongs to everyone. Whenever possible, these sites should be protected and preserved in place as part of our shared history.
