National Unc Day is celebrated every year on August 7. It's a day to honor positive elder role models and mentors--often called "Unc" in the Black community--who act like friends and "second parents" by sharing love, support, and cultural memories. People can celebrate by tapping in to an Unc with a call, text, visit, or post that's specific about how they made a difference; hosting an "Unc Cookout" or family meal; recording their stories through interviews; or mentoring in their honor by checking in on younger people, volunteering, or being more present. Created by Donovan Johnson in 2026, National Unc Day recognizes the steady guidance and quiet impact these men have on families and generations.
