California has officially designated May 17 as Bruce Lee Day, making Bruce Lee the first Chinese American in state history honored with an annual namesake day. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation, according to San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney.

The date commemorates May 17, 1959, when the 18-year-old Lee returned to San Francisco after spending his childhood in Hong Kong--an important moment that helped set him on his path as a martial arts teacher and global screen icon.

Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee, CEO of the Bruce Lee Foundation, called the honor a lasting legacy that bridges cultures, noting its impact on young people finding confidence in his philosophy, families seeing themselves represented on screen, and athletes drawing on his teachings of discipline and inner strength.

In the 1960s, Lee's Hollywood breakthrough included playing Kato on "The Green Hornet," but studios pushed him into racist stereotypes and paid him less than his white counterparts. He later returned to Hong Kong, becoming a megastar of martial arts films such as "The Big Boss" and "Fist of Fury." Lee died in 1973 at just 32 years old after an allergic reaction to pain medication.

Organizers--including the Bruce Lee Foundation and Asian American organizations--hope future annual observances will include voluntary commemorative activities across the state, such as cultural exhibits, public events, and classroom lessons.
