The Flash is a comic book superhero created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. The character first appeared in 1940 in Flash Comics #1 and was initially called Jay Garrick. He was the first superhero to be known as the Flash and was a college student who gained superhuman speed after inhaling hard water vapors.

In 1956, DC Comics relaunched the Flash character with a new identity and origin story. This new version of the Flash was named Barry Allen and was a police scientist who gained superhuman speed after being struck by lightning while working in his laboratory. This version of the character became one of the most popular superheroes of the Silver Age of Comics and was a founding member of the Justice League of America.

Over the years, the Flash has been depicted in various comic book series and has been portrayed by several different characters, including Wally West and Bart Allen. The Flash has also been adapted into various other forms of media, including television shows, animated series, and live-action films.

Within the storyverse, Central City declared Flash Appreciation Day in the "Flash and Substance" episode of Justice League Unlimited, which aired on February 11, 2006. For this reason, Flash Appreciation Day is celebrated by Flash devotees each year on February 11th.
